Real Madrid announced the news via their official website on Sunday morning.
Real Madrid confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach in a statement released Sunday. The former midfielder has signed a three-year contract, effective June 1, 2025, and will lead the team through June 2028. The announcement ends weeks of speculation following current manager Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to depart for the Brazilian national team.
Alonso, 43, will take charge after the 2025 Club World Cup (June 15–30), where Madrid will defend their title. The Spaniard’s arrival marks a homecoming—he spent five seasons at the club as a player, winning two Champions League trophies and a La Liga title.
Alonso’s tactical acumen impressed during his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder arrives after a transformative spell at Bayer Leverkusen. In his debut season (2023/24), he guided the Bundesliga side to an unbeaten league title, a historic feat in German football. Though Leverkusen finished second to Bayern Munich this season, Alonso’s innovative tactics and man-management solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest coaches.
Erik ten Hag, recently linked with the vacant Leverkusen role, is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Alonso. The ex-Manchester United manager has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in 2024.
Madrid’s statement praised Alonso’s “vision and leadership,” emphasizing his deep understanding of the club’s culture. Fans will hope he can replicate his playing success from the dugout, with the club eyeing a 16th Champions League title next season.
