Scientist Claims You Should Only Drink One Glass of Wine a Year
By Xantha Leatham, Executive Science Editor

A leading scientist has sparked debate by claiming that just one large glass of wine per year is the safest amount of alcohol a person can consume due to its toxicity. Professor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacologist at Imperial College London, argues that alcohol would never pass modern food safety standards if invented today.

"Maximal Recommended Amount": A Yearly Sip
Studies on alcohol’s toxicology—the study of harmful chemical effects—suggest even moderate consumption poses risks. During an appearance on the BBC’s Instant Genius podcast, Prof. Nutt emphasized, “If we invented alcohol now, it would fail safety testing. Toxicology studies show the maximal safe amount is one large glass annually.”

Alcohol’s Global Harm
Professor Nutt, former UK government drugs advisor, noted alcohol and tobacco cause more global deaths than any other substances. Yet, he acknowledged alcohol’s cultural role: “It’s not all bad. We should aim to maximize benefits and minimize harms.” While some studies link red wine to heart health, broader research contradicts this.

No Safe Level, Says Lancet Study
In 2018, a landmark study in The Lancet concluded there’s no safe level of alcohol consumption. The risks of cancer, liver disease, and other conditions outweigh potential benefits. Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University countered, “Life has no ‘safe’ level, but we don’t recommend abstaining from living. Moderation is key.”

Current Guidelines vs. Science
UK health officials advise no more than 14 units weekly (≈4 glasses of wine). However, Prof. Nutt warns these limits ignore alcohol’s cumulative harm. “People underestimate risks because alcohol is socially accepted,” he said.

Balancing Enjoyment and Risk
Despite alarming data, many experts caution against total abstinence. The key is informed choice: understanding risks while enjoying occasional drinks responsibly. As Prof. Spiegelhalter quipped, “Driving isn’t safe either, but we don’t ban it.”

Final Thought
While science increasingly highlights alcohol’s dangers, cultural habits and pleasure keep it ingrained. The debate continues, but one message is clear: less is more when it comes to drinking.
