Fans of the ’90s teen drama Sweet Valley High were thrilled when photos of Michael Perl, who played lovable class clown Winston Egbert, resurfaced online nearly 30 years after the show’s debut. The actor, now sporting a scruffy beard and stylish demeanor, shared snaps on social media—including one with his wife, Melissa Lugo, and another from a recent production set—showcasing a far cry from his nerdy on-screen persona.

From Sweet Valley to Hollywood
After the show ended in 1997, Perl earned a BFA in Theatre from UCLA and built a diverse career. He appeared in The Bold and the Beautiful, Scandal, and Chuck, and co-founded the production company Burton Street Productions with his wife. The company has produced award-winning short films and web series, with three new projects in development: Edith & Harvey, The Enlightenment of Brittany Darlington, and Hortak.

Winston Egbert’s Dark Fate
In Sweet Valley High: Confidential 10 Years Later, Perl’s character Winston—nicknamed “Winnie” in college—evolves from a quirky teen into a bitter businessman. Tragically, he dies after a drunken fall from his balcony, a twist that shocked fans of the originally lighthearted series.

A ’90s Cultural Phenomenon
Based on Francine Pascal’s bestselling novels, Sweet Valley High followed twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield in California. The franchise spanned 181 books, spin-offs, and a TV series (1994–1997). Pascal, who executive produced the show, passed away in July 2024 at 92 after battling cancer.
