The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly working to re-sign quarterback Sam Darnold but will not use the franchise tag to retain him ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Tagging Darnold would have guaranteed him $40.2 million for 2025, but Minnesota is instead focused on negotiating a long-term deal.

Darnold, 27, joined the Vikings in 2024 on a one-year “prove-it” contract after previous stints with the Jets, Panthers, and 49ers. Initially seen as a bridge starter while 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy developed, Darnold seized the role after McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

The former No. 3 overall pick delivered a career-best season, leading Minnesota to a 14-3 record while throwing for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl nod and placed him 10th in MVP voting. Despite his regular-season success, the Vikings fell 27-9 to the Rams in the playoffs.

Darnold’s resurgence marked a dramatic turnaround for a quarterback once labeled a draft bust. After struggling with the Jets (13-25 record as starter) and Panthers (8-9), he revived his career under Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell’s system. Across 83 NFL games, Darnold has thrown for 16,383 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 68 interceptions.

Minnesota’s decision to avoid the franchise tag suggests confidence in reaching a team-friendly deal. Meanwhile, Darnold enters free agency as a hot commodity, with the Giants, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, and Titans all seeking quarterback upgrades. New York has rumored interest in Aaron Rodgers, but Darnold’s affordability and 2024 form make him a viable option.

As Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET tag deadline looms, the Vikings aim to secure their QB future without financial overcommitment.
