Referees in Sunday’s NBL Grand Final between the Illawarra Hawks and Melbourne United will wear black armbands to honor Brad Giersch, a beloved former colleague and decorated firefighter who passed away Thursday after battling a work-related illness.

Giersch, a Basketball NSW Hall of Famer (2021), dedicated over two decades to officiating, spanning 400+ NBL games, 27 WNBL matches, six Grand Final series, and international tournaments like the 2006 Commonwealth Games and FIBA Olympic Qualifiers. Renowned for his integrity, he mentored countless referees, even umpiring a junior game shortly after a 2016 NBL Finals match.

“His impact on basketball was immense. Brad was respected by everyone,” said Olympic referee James Boyer, who debuted in Giersch’s 350th game.

Beyond basketball, Giersch served as a Fire and Rescue NSW Station Officer for 28 years. He led the response to the 2014 Rozelle explosion, where a deliberately lit fire claimed three lives, including an 11-month-old boy. His leadership during the tragedy earned him recognition from NSW Police and Fire and Rescue.

“He was a selfless leader who uplifted others in the toughest moments,” said Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell. Giersch also contributed to the Fire Investigation Unit’s K-9 team, mentoring peers while balancing his refereeing career.

Colleagues and loved ones remembered his resilience and positivity, even during his illness. Daughter Renee shared online: “Love you forever, Dad. The strongest man until the end.” His daughter Tara added, “The fire service was his second family. He cherished the bonds he built.”

A funeral with full fire service honors will be held at St Charles Borromeo Church in Ryde. The NBL expressed condolences to his wife, Louise, and their three children, stating, “Brad’s legacy in basketball and service will never be forgotten.”
