Oscar Piastri roared back from a rough start to the Formula 1 season, clinching second place in the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race with a daring pass on reigning champion Max Verstappen. The 23-year-old Australian showcased composure under pressure, finishing behind Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who secured his maiden win for the Italian team. The result marked a dramatic turnaround for Piastri after a rain-marred Melbourne race saw him plummet from podium contention to ninth.
Starting third on the grid, Piastri shadowed leaders Hamilton and Verstappen in the 19-lap sprint. With clear skies aiding McLaren’s strategy, he pounced on Verstappen’s fading Red Bull late in the race, executing a clean overtake at the hairpin. “Finishing second was great—I learned a lot,” Piastri said post-race. “We didn’t have enough pace for Lewis, but it’s a strong step forward.”

The performance contrasted sharply with his Australian GP disaster, where a sudden downpour on dry tires cost him crucial positions. In Shanghai, however, Piastri’s RB car excelled in dry conditions, allowing him to challenge the front-runners. “We’ve got good pace,” he noted. “The Ferraris are rapid, but we’re in the fight.”
Hamilton dominated from pole, breaking the Shanghai lap record in qualifying. Verstappen struggled with tire wear, radioing his team: “Both front tires are dead.” Piastri capitalized, surging past the Dutchman and pulling clear. Though unable to catch Hamilton, the Australian’s drive earned McLaren seven championship points, lifting him to sixth in the standings.

Behind the podium trio, George Russell claimed fourth for Mercedes after overtaking Charles Leclerc, who finished fifth. Yuki Tsunoda (RB), Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), and Lando Norris rounded out the points. Norris, Piastri’s teammate, endured a messy start, dropping to eighth after running wide early.
Alpine’s Jack Doohan had a race to forget, colliding with Gabriel Bortoleto on the final lap to finish last.
Piastri’s podium signals a resurgence for McLaren, proving their potential to mix it with F1’s elite. With dry weather forecast for Sunday’s main event, the Aussie will aim to build on his momentum—and perhaps chase another historic result.
