Michigan-based Cargill Kitchen Solutions has voluntarily recalled more than 200,000 pounds of liquid egg products over concerns they may contain sodium hypochlorite, a chemical found in bleach. The recall affects multiple Egg Beaters and Bob Evans brands, distributed to retailers and foodservice locations nationwide.
Affected Products and Distribution
The recall includes:
- Egg Beaters Original (32-ounce cartons; use-by dates: August 10, 2025).
- Egg Beaters Cage-Free Original (liquid and frozen; use-by dates: August 9, 2025, and March 7, 2025).
- Bob Evans Better’n Eggs Made with Real Egg Whites (32-ounce cartons; use-by August 10, 2025).
Products were shipped to distributors in Ohio and Texas, and foodservice locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and potentially other states. Consumers should check for the establishment number “G1804” near the use-by date.

Health Risks of Sodium Hypochlorite
Sodium hypochlorite, a key ingredient in bleach, can cause severe health issues if ingested, including tissue damage, internal burns, and organ failure. Poison Control warns that even small amounts may lead to nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, while higher concentrations can be fatal.
However, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) classified this as a Class III recall, meaning exposure is unlikely to cause adverse effects. No illnesses have been reported so far.

What Consumers Should Do
- Do not consume recalled products.
- Discard them or return to the purchase location.
- Contact a healthcare provider if you experience symptoms.
The contamination was flagged by an FSIS tip, prompting an investigation. While risks are deemed low, caution is urged.
