Spanish football legend Sergio Ramos, 38, has signed a one-year deal with Mexican club Monterrey, ending his six-month spell as a free agent. However, his wife, TV personality Pilar Rubio, has decided to remain in Spain due to professional commitments and exhaustion from frequent relocations.
Why Pilar Rubio Is Staying Put
According to journalist Javi de Hoyos of Bild, Rubio, 46, is “tired of moving” after previously relocating to Paris and Seville for Ramos’ career. The couple, married since 2019 with four sons, will now live separately as Ramos begins his Monterrey chapter.

Rubio, a renowned TV presenter and model, is set to judge two Spanish shows: El Desafío (Antena 3) and Maestros de la Costura Celebrity. A source close to Rubio stated, “She told Ramos, ‘This time I will not give in. I’m staying in Madrid with the kids.’”
Ramos’ Career Challenges
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 after 16 trophy-laden years, Ramos struggled with injuries at Paris Saint-Germain and later at Sevilla. His last match was Sevilla’s 2-1 loss to Barcelona in May 2024. Monterrey offers a fresh start ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S., where they’ll face Inter Milan, River Plate, and Urawa Red Diamonds.

Family First
The couple’s children—Sergio Jr., Marco, Alejandro, and Maximo Adriano—will remain in Madrid with Rubio. Despite the distance, Ramos emphasized family unity in his Monterrey announcement, calling Mexico a “country of opportunities.”
Ramos’ move highlights athletes’ balancing acts between career demands and family life. For now, the defender will chase silverware in Mexico while Rubio thrives in Spain’s spotlight.
