Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 34, has reportedly agreed to join Mexican Liga MX side Club Universidad Nacional (Pumas) after a brief and challenging spell as Cardiff City’s caretaker manager. Ramsey’s playing contract with Cardiff expires this month, and the Championship club’s hesitation to offer him a permanent managerial role has paved the way for his move abroad.

Ramsey was appointed interim manager in May 2025 following Omer Riza’s dismissal, tasked with saving Cardiff from relegation. Despite two draws and a defeat in his three games in charge, the Bluebirds were relegated to League One. His short-term deal included coaching responsibilities in Cardiff’s academy, but negotiations for a full-time position stalled.

The Welshman’s illustrious playing career includes a decade at Arsenal (2009–2019), where he made 369 appearances, scored 64 goals, and became a fan favorite under Arsène Wenger. His iconic extra-time winner in the 2014 FA Cup final ended Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought, and he netted again in the 2017 final victory over Chelsea. After leaving Arsenal, he had stints at Juventus, Rangers, and Nice before rejoining Cardiff in 2023. However, injuries limited him to just 11 appearances last season.

Reports from PA News indicate Ramsey’s imminent move to Pumas, who finished 11th in Liga MX’s 2024 Clausura season. The club is eager to leverage his experience as they rebuild their squad.

While Cardiff fans hoped Ramsey might transition into a long-term managerial role, the club’s hierarchy appears focused on securing a seasoned coach for their League One campaign. Ramsey, meanwhile, seems ready for a new chapter in Mexico.
