Kyle MacLachlan, known for his role as Charlotte York’s ex-husband Trey MacDougal in Sex and the City (SATC), revealed he hasn’t joined the spinoff And Just Like That (AJLT) due to creative disagreements. The 66-year-old actor, famous for his Emmy-nominated role in Twin Peaks, shared with Us Weekly that while he’d “love to come back and have fun,” his vision for Trey’s storyline clashed with producers’ ideas.
MacLachlan suggested Trey could have evolved into a Napa Valley winery owner, humorously nodding to his real-life wine ventures. “I think there should be more to his relationship with Charlotte than their initial idea,” he explained. Despite the impasse, he praised the show’s current direction, calling the cast “lovely” and expressing admiration for stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis.

Tension Behind the Scenes
The actor’s comments come amid longstanding reports of friction between Parker and Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones. Cattrall famously declined to join AJLT’s main cast but made a brief, well-paid cameo in a 2023 episode. Though she didn’t film scenes with Parker, Nixon, or Davis, her return fueled speculation about unresolved tensions.

Legacy of Sex and the City
The original series, which aired from 1998 to 2004, became a cultural phenomenon, earning seven Emmys. AJLT continues the stories of Carrie (Parker), Miranda (Nixon), and Charlotte (Davis) navigating life in their 50s. While fan reactions to the spinoff have been mixed, MacLachlan insists the show is “doing great” without him.

Though Trey’s future remains uncertain, MacLachlan remains open to revisiting the role if the storyline aligns with his vision. For now, fans will have to imagine what a Napa-based Trey might have brought to the reboot.
