Ex-MTV Reality Star Behind Hotel Striptease Named New NASA Chief

MTV Star Sean Duffy Named NASA’s Interim Leader Amid Agency Challenges

President Donald Trump appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, a former MTV reality star, as NASA’s interim administrator on Wednesday, praising him as a “fantastic leader.” Duffy, 53, known for his stint on The Real World and Road Rules in the 1990s, accepted the role despite recently resurfaced footage of a hotel room striptease from his MTV days.

Duffy’s early-career antics—including a clip of him dancing provocatively with a castmate—reemerged online earlier this year. However, the White House dismissed the controversy, with Trump calling him “TREMENDOUS” in a Truth Social post. Duffy replaces Janet Petro, NASA’s acting administrator since January, while retaining his Transportation Department duties.

Married to Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy (whom he met on Road Rules: All Stars), Duffy served as a Wisconsin congressman from 2011–2019 before joining Trump’s cabinet. His political rise has overshadowed his reality TV past, though critics question his suitability for leading a major science agency.

Duffy’s appointment followed Trump’s abrupt withdrawal of billionaire Jared Isaacman’s nomination due to his Democratic ties. Isaacman, a space tourist, endorsed Duffy’s selection, calling it a “great move.”

As administrator, Duffy will navigate NASA’s significant challenges: A proposed 24% budget cut (from $24.8B to $18.9B) and over 2,100 senior staff exits via a federal resignation program. Most departing employees hold critical roles in science, spaceflight, and IT, sparking concerns about expertise loss.

Casey Dreier of The Planetary Society warned the cuts risk undermining NASA’s “managerial and technical expertise.” The agency, however, insists it remains focused on lunar and Mars missions. Duffy’s ability to rally political support for these goals—amid austerity—will define his tenure.

NASA has not directly addressed the staff exodus but stated it is “committed to our mission” under tightened budgets. Duffy’s reality-TV resilience may now face its ultimate test in steering America’s space ambitions.
