Joanna Carson, the third wife of late Tonight Show legend Johnny Carson, is being celebrated by friends and charities following her death in July. She was laid to rest in a private funeral service, as reported by Extra.

The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation honored Joanna and philanthropist Wallis Annenberg in a heartfelt Facebook post, praising their “spirit of love and support” that aligned with Taylor’s vision. Joanna, a former model, was married to Johnny from 1972 until their divorce in 1985, which resulted in a historic $20 million settlement.

Before marrying Johnny, Joanna was wed to backgammon player Tim Holland for six years, with whom she had a son, Joe, who passed away in 1994. Her marriage to Johnny—his third—became a pop culture footnote, especially after comedian Eddie Murphy humorously referenced their costly divorce in his 1987 special Raw.

Johnny Carson, who hosted The Tonight Show for 30 years until 1992, died in 2005. Recently, his legacy resurfaced in discussions about late-night TV’s shifting dynamics, with analysts contrasting his politically neutral approach to modern hosts like Stephen Colbert.

Joanna’s philanthropic efforts included supporting SHARE, a charity aiding developmentally disabled and abused children, and collaborating with late designer Michaele Vollbracht, whose fashion house she funded. Friends and supporters flooded the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation’s post with tributes, calling her a “generous angel” and praising her moral compass.
