Andrew Morley traded TV fame for a firefighter’s helmet—and hasn’t looked back.
Australian actor Andrew Morley, 35, once captivated audiences with roles in iconic soaps Home and Away and Neighbours. Known for his charm as Spencer (brother to Johnny Ruffo’s character) and as Olympia Valance’s priest love interest, Jack Callahan, Morley seemed destined for stardom. But in 2020, he shocked fans by leaving acting to become a Melbourne-based firefighter. In an exclusive interview, he reveals why this drastic career shift brought him fulfillment—and what he doesn’t miss about Hollywood.
Family First: A Catalyst for Change

Becoming a father inspired Morley to seek stability.
The birth of his daughter Skyla Rose in 2017 (and his marriage to partner Jay Haggar a year later) reshaped Morley’s priorities. “The instability of chasing roles with no guaranteed income didn’t appeal anymore,” he explains. “When my Neighbours contract ended in 2020, I had to choose: keep hunting for acting gigs or provide for my family. Firefighting offered the security I needed.”
Having volunteered with fire services during his acting career, transitioning full-time felt natural. “The adrenaline and unpredictability of firefighting are rewarding—it’s unscripted, unlike TV,” he laughs. “I’d get in trouble for ad-libbing on set! Acting never felt entirely natural to me.”
Escaping the “Cutthroat” World of Showbiz

His soap opera days were glamorous but grueling.
Morley doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of acting. “The pressure is insane. Cameras are rolling, and you’re aware millions will judge your performance. You have to be ‘on’ constantly.” He also struggled with the industry’s competitiveness: “On set, everyone’s fighting for their career. Here, firefighters work as a team—no hierarchy or backstabbing.”
He recalls advice from Home and Away veteran Ray Meagher: “Treat every job like it’s your last. That stuck with me.” This mindset prepared him for Neighbours’ abrupt cancellation in 2023. “It’s sad, especially for the crew who lost steady work. But I’m grateful I left when I did.”
Embracing a Life of Service

Firefighting offers camaraderie and purpose.
Now with Fire Rescue Victoria, Morley thrives on the job’s physical and emotional demands. “We face traumatic situations, but the support here is unmatched. On TV sets, no one asked, ‘Need counseling?’ Here, mental health is prioritized.”
The role also grants him family time he never had as an actor. “I drop off and pick up my kids, coach their sports teams—this predictability is priceless.”
No Regrets

He’s found his true calling.
While nostalgic for soap opera friendships, Morley has no plans to return. “I felt like a fish out of water in acting. Firefighting lets me make a real difference.” He adds, “I see myself doing this for decades. It’s where I belong.”
Andrew Morley’s story proves that sometimes, stepping out of the spotlight leads to the brightest path.
