Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has defiantly dismissed criticism of his leadership and on-field behavior from club legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville, declaring outside opinions "won’t define him."
The Portugal midfielder has faced months of scrutiny, with Keane branding Fernandes and his teammates “bluffers” after a 4-1 loss to Newcastle last April—United’s 14th league defeat of the season. Neville, meanwhile, has criticized Fernandes’ penchant for arguing with officials and teammates, calling it “embarrassing” during a 2023 defeat to Liverpool.
Fernandes has faced intense scrutiny over his leadership style.
In an interview with the BBC ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby against City, Fernandes was asked what people misunderstand about him. He replied sharply: “People have the freedom to think what they want. I don’t judge others until I know them—they’re welcome to do the same. Life would be boring if we all thought alike.”
Keane, a former United captain, doubled down on his “bluffers” remark last season, questioning whether Fernandes’ vocal leadership had any real impact. “Good teammates hold each other accountable. These players don’t—they just bluff,” he said on Sky Sports. Neville added that Fernandes’ constant complaints set a poor example for younger players.
Roy Keane has repeatedly questioned Fernandes’ influence in the squad.
Despite the backlash, Fernandes was United’s standout performer last season, racking up 19 goals and 18 assists across all competitions. This campaign, he’s already delivered decisive moments, netting a late winner in United’s 3-2 victory over Burnley.
Sunday’s derby at the Etihad presents a pivotal test. United, with just four points from three league games, aim to disrupt City’s recent dominance in the fixture. Pep Guardiola’s side, after losing their last two matches, will be eager to rebound at home.
Fernandes’ resilience will be crucial. As he put it: “What matters is what I do on the pitch. The rest is noise.”
