NFL Exec Admits Not Wanting Tom Brady Near Team Amid Dual Fox-Raiders Role Criticism

NFL Exec Expresses Concern Over Tom Brady’s Dual Roles With Raiders and Fox

An NFL executive has openly criticized Tom Brady’s dual roles as Fox Sports’ lead analyst and Las Vegas Raiders partial owner, calling into question the potential conflict of interest. The controversy reignited after Brady was spotted wearing a headset in the Raiders’ coaching booth during their Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Brady’s Unprecedented Position
Brady, the retired seven-time Super Bowl champion, joined Fox’s broadcasting team in 2023 and was approved as a minority Raiders owner in May 2024. However, the NFL imposed strict rules—dubbed the “Brady Rules”—to limit his access. These barred him from attending other teams’ practices, production meetings, or facilities. Despite this, Brady’s visible involvement with the Raiders during games has sparked skepticism.

Executive’s Unease Over ‘Game Plan Mode’ Access
One NFC executive told Yahoo! Sports that Brady’s presence in rival teams’ buildings during game preparations poses a “competitive concern.”
“I don’t like the idea of him spending time in our building talking to everyone when we are in game plan mode,” the executive said. “Even if he isn’t giving input during the game, the real damage would’ve already been done during the week.”

Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly reportedly speaks with Brady “two to three times a week” to review game film—a claim head coach Pete Carroll clarified as “not accurate” but admitted Brady is a regular resource. “We have a tremendous asset,” Carroll said.

NFL Defends Flexibility in ‘Brady Rules’
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed Brady is permitted to attend Raiders games and coaching sessions as an owner but emphasized restrictions:
“Brady remains barred from visiting other teams’ facilities or in-person production meetings. He may participate remotely and conduct off-site interviews, as he did ahead of last year’s Super Bowl.”

The league also clarified that owners are allowed in coaching booths during games but cannot use personal electronic devices.

Competitive Concerns Linger
Of nine league sources surveyed by Yahoo! Sports, five expressed concern over Brady’s dual roles, particularly given his scheduled broadcasting of seven Raiders opponents’ games this season. Critics argue his behind-the-scenes access with Las Vegas creates an unfair advantage.

What’s Next for Brady?
Brady will call the Dallas Cowboys vs. Chicago Bears game this Sunday for Fox. Meanwhile, the NFL faces growing scrutiny over how it navigates the blurred lines between media roles and team ownership. For now, the “Brady Rules” remain in place—but the debate over their adequacy is far from over.
