Mysterious Figure Sparks Bigfoot Frenzy in Colorado Rockies

A Colorado rafting crew’s recent encounter with a mysterious figure in the wilderness has reignited the enduring legend of Bigfoot. On May 24, a Colorado River Expeditions team stopped for lunch along the Upper Colorado River when one member spotted a large, bipedal creature roughly 500 yards away.

“At first, someone thought it was a bear,” said lead guide Logan Kirk. “But it was standing upright—definitely not a bear.” The crew filmed the figure before it vanished into the trees. The video, shared on Instagram, shows a tall, hairy entity stopping to gaze at the camera (see Fig. 1).

While the clip went viral, skepticism followed. Critics argued it could be a bear on hind legs, a person in a costume, or a hoax. Others noted the familiar critique of blurry, distant Bigfoot footage. Still, Colorado has reported over 100 alleged Sasquatch sightings since March 2024.

Kirk remains intrigued: “We’re planning to return to search for footprints or other evidence. It’s rocky, but we’ll try.”

Bigfoot’s Origins: From Myth to Modern Fame

Legends of hairy, human-like giants span centuries among Indigenous North American cultures, often dubbed “Sasquatch” (meaning “wild man”). Modern fascination began in 1958 after the Humboldt Times published a letter about mysterious giant footprints in Bluff Creek, California. The term “Bigfoot” soon entered pop culture.

The most famous encounter occurred in 1967, when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin captured the iconic Patterson-Gimlin film. Shot in Bluff Creek, the footage shows a towering, ape-like creature striding through a riverbed (Fig. 2).

Patterson’s horse reportedly panicked, forcing him to dismount and film hurriedly. The figure turns to face the camera mid-stride, its fur and muscular frame visible. Despite claims by retiree Bob Heironimus that he wore a costume for the video, Gimlin maintains it was genuine.

Hoax or Hidden Species?

Experts remain divided. Many dismiss sightings as misidentified bears or hoaxes. However, enthusiasts argue that remote wilderness areas like Colorado’s Rockies leave room for undiscovered species.

As Kirk’s team prepares their follow-up expedition, the debate continues. Whether a prankster, bear, or something more mysterious, the allure of Bigfoot endures—a blend of mystery, myth, and the human love for the unexplained.
