Bob Broder, the revered Hollywood agent who packaged legendary sitcom Cheers and shaped countless hit series, has died at 85. His family confirmed he passed away on September 23 after a battle with cancer.

Broder’s career spanned decades, with his work at agencies BWCS and ICM cementing him as a titan of television. He was instrumental in assembling the creative teams behind era-defining shows like Cheers (1982–1993), Frasier, The X-Files, Modern Family, and The Big Bang Theory. At the time of his death, he was collaborating with producer Chuck Lorre on the upcoming series Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

The “Mayor of Cheers
Broder’s legacy is most closely tied to Cheers, the beloved NBC sitcom set in a Boston bar. He represented the show’s creators—brothers Glen and Les Charles and director James Burrows—and became a fixture on set. Cast and crew fondly dubbed him the “mayor of Cheers,” and he even made a cameo in the series finale as a patron knocking on the bar’s door.

The show launched stars like Ted Danson (as ex-pitcher Sam Malone) and Kirstie Alley, earning a permanent place in pop culture. Broder’s knack for nurturing talent extended to other classics, including Dharma & Greg and Two and a Half Men.

A Mentor and Innovator
Colleagues remembered Broder as a trailblazer who redefined the role of agents. “He elevated what it means to be an agent,” said Ted Chervin, a longtime associate. “His sophistication and authority inspired everyone around him.” Broder also mentored writers like David Lloyd and his son Christopher Lloyd (Modern Family), leaving an indelible mark on TV comedy.

Beyond his professional achievements, Broder was celebrated for his integrity and warmth. Tributes flooded social media, with peers highlighting his ability to balance sharp business acumen with genuine camaraderie. As Chervin noted, “He had a statesman-like quality that changed the game.”

Broder is survived by his family, who were by his side during his final moments. His influence on television—from Cheers’ heartfelt humor to The X-Files’ intrigue—ensures his legacy will endure.
