Bruno Fernandes delivered a blunt assessment of Manchester United’s pre-season performance after their 2-2 draw with Everton in Atlanta, branding his teammates “lazy” and urging the club to secure more signings before the new season.

United concluded their U.S. tour by lifting the Premier League Summer Series trophy, remaining unbeaten in four friendlies. However, Fernandes highlighted recurring flaws despite the positives. The Portuguese midfielder scored a penalty and set up Mason Mount’s second-half goal but criticized United’s lack of intensity.

“Our performance wasn’t the best off the ball,” Fernandes said. “We were a little lazy, and that’s something we must avoid. Laziness costs you in football, no matter the game.”

The United captain also emphasized the need for squad reinforcements, acknowledging the club’s financial constraints while pushing for competitive depth. “The club is doing their best financially, but we need more quality and competition. Players must fight harder to earn their spots,” he stated.

Erik ten Hag’s side led twice against Everton, with 21-year-old striker Mateo Mejia opening the scoring before Fernandes converted a penalty. Everton’s Dwight McNeil equalized, and Mount’s strike was later canceled out by substitute striker Reece Welch.

Fernandes stressed the importance of focus amid relentless scrutiny at United.

Fernandes stressed that marginal gains matter at a club of United’s stature. “Every detail counts. We’re under a global microscope—mistakes here cost more. The culture here was built on winning, and we must restore that.”

Despite frustrations, Fernandes praised improvements behind the scenes, including upgraded facilities and staff changes. “Fans are paying more to support us—they deserve better. It’s time we repay them on the pitch.”

Transfer Watch
United’s summer signings include Mathijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte, but Ten Hag seeks additional reinforcements. Defensive depth remains a priority, with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies linked. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is another target, though financial fair play rules complicate deals.

Mount’s Momentum
Mason Mount, who netted his second goal of pre-season, is finding form after a subdued debut year. “Fitting into a new team takes time,” Fernandes said. “Mason’s quality is undeniable, and his energy lifts us.”

Final Word
