Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs recently joked about Tom Brady’s age, comparing the legendary quarterback to his mother during a lighthearted podcast appearance.

Wirfs, 26, was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2020—the same year the 45-year-old Brady joined the team after two decades with the New England Patriots. Tasked with protecting the veteran QB, Wirfs quipped on the Calm Down with Erin and Charissa podcast: “Tom was my QB. They were like, ‘Don’t let anybody touch him.’ I was like, ‘Alright…he’s fragile, he’s old. Not that old, not that old!’”

The offensive tackle then highlighted their age gap, noting Brady is just two years younger than his mom. “He could practically be my dad!” Wirfs laughed before apologizing. Despite the jokes, Wirfs excelled in his role. During the 2020 season, Brady was sacked just 21 times—among the lowest totals for starting QBs—as Tampa Bay surged to a Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brady’s move to Tampa Bay followed rising tension with longtime Patriots coach Bill Belichick, as revealed in the QB’s recent newsletter. Though the duo won six Super Bowls together in New England, Brady shared: “After twenty years, a natural tension developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed… It could only be resolved by a split.”

Wirfs, meanwhile, became a cornerstone of Tampa’s offense, earning three Pro Bowl nods. His humor and chemistry with Brady underscored their successful partnership, proving that even a 21-year age gap couldn’t stop the Buccaneers from making history.
