Cryptic Oceanic Signals Unveil Non-Human Intelligence Communication, Scientists Report
Humpback Whales’ Bubble Rings Could Unlock Clues to Alien Communication, Say Scientists
Researchers from the SETI Institute have discovered that humpback whales produce mysterious “smoke ring-like” bubbles in the ocean—a behavior potentially aimed at communicating with humans. These enigmatic rings, previously observed only during feeding or mating, were documented interacting with people for the first time, suggesting a deliberate attempt to connect. Scientists believe studying this phenomenon could refine the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
A New Form of Whale “Hello”
Between 2019 and 2023, the WhaleSETI team analyzed 12 cases involving 11 whales emitting bubble rings near boats, swimmers, or planes. The whales showed curiosity and playfulness, circling vessels, spyhopping (peeking above water), and releasing bubbles 6–10 feet wide. The rings often drifted directly toward humans, followed by the whales lingering as if awaiting a response.

“They’re blowing bubbles in our direction to play, observe our reaction, or communicate,” said Dr. Fred Sharpe, co-author of the study published in Marine Mammal Science. This behavior marks a shift from aggression or evasion, indicating comfort and intentionality.
Linking Whales to Extraterrestrial Intelligence
SETI researchers propose that whale communication parallels how aliens might attempt contact. Just as whales target humans with bubbles, extraterrestrial civilizations could send directed signals to Earth. The team uses humpbacks as models for non-human intelligence to decode potential cosmic messages.

In 2023, researchers even held a 20-minute “conversation” with a humpback named Twain in Alaska. By playing recorded calls, Twain mirrored the timing and frequency of responses—a breakthrough in cross-species communication.
The Drake Equation Connection
These findings tie into the Drake Equation, which estimates detectable alien civilizations in our galaxy. If curiosity drives communication in whales, similar traits might exist in extraterrestrial life. “Understanding non-human intelligence on Earth sharpens our search for life beyond it,” said SETI’s Dr. Laurance Doyle.

Why It Matters
Bubble rings add to growing evidence of whale sophistication, challenging assumptions about animal intelligence. For SETI, such interactions underscore the importance of seeking targeted, deliberate signals—like a bubble ring or radio wave—amid cosmic noise. As humanity explores ocean worlds like Europa and Enceladus, recognizing unconventional communication methods becomes vital.
By bridging marine biology and astrobiology, this research offers a playful yet profound reminder: the secrets to alien contact might lie in Earth’s own depths.
