Darius Slay Joins Pittsburgh Steelers After Eagles Release

Veteran cornerback Darius Slay has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles, who parted ways with the six-time Pro Bowler after their 2025 Super Bowl victory. NFL insider Jordan Schultz confirmed the move Monday, marking a fresh start for the 34-year-old defensive star.
Slay’s Stellar Career
Slay, a former second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2013, spent seven seasons in Detroit before joining the Eagles in 2020. During his tenure in Philadelphia, he became a defensive cornerstone, earning three Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro selection. Despite a strong 2024 season—logging 49 tackles, 13 pass defenses, and a forced fumble—Slay’s role diminished with the rise of rookie Quinyon Mitchell. His $17M 2025 salary likely influenced the Eagles’ decision to release him.

Steelers’ Offseason Overhaul
Pittsburgh has aggressively retooled its roster this offseason. Days before acquiring Slay, the Steelers traded a 2025 second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, signing him to a five-year, $150M extension. Metcalf, who reportedly requested a trade from Seattle, adds firepower to Pittsburgh’s offense alongside George Pickens.
Quarterback Questions Remain
The Steelers’ QB room remains in flux. After pairing Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2024, Fields inked a two-year, $30M guaranteed deal to stay in Pittsburgh. Last season, Fields threw for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns in limited action, while Wilson started 11 games, tallying 2,482 passing yards and 16 scores. Despite their efforts, the Steelers stumbled late, losing four straight before a Wild Card exit to Baltimore.

What’s Next for Pittsburgh?
With Slay shoring up the secondary and Metcalf boosting receiving depth, the Steelers aim to reclaim AFC North dominance. However, clarity at quarterback will be critical to their 2025 success.
