Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins made an emotional entrance to Super Bowl LIX, wearing a mink coat that once belonged to his late father, Harris Steve Hopkins, who died in a car accident in 1992 when Hopkins was just five months old.

The star receiver, acquired from the Tennessee Titans in October, became a key piece of the Chiefs’ playoff run. But his gameday tribute to his father stole the spotlight. “My dad was a leader of our family and community,” Hopkins revealed. “Having a piece of him with me means everything.”

Hopkins had vowed to wear his father’s coat on either his wedding day or his first Super Bowl appearance. With the Chiefs reaching the championship game, he chose the latter—even after tailoring the decades-old mink to fit. “I’m not married yet, so this was the moment,” he told reporters.

Despite Kansas City’s 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Hopkins’ gesture resonated deeply. Beyond family tributes, he frequently honors his mother, Sabrina Greenlee, by gifting her footballs after touchdowns. Greenlee, who survived a 2002 assault that left her permanently blinded, has been a pillar of strength in his life.

Impact on the Chiefs’ Season

When injuries sidelined receivers Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice midseason, Hopkins’ arrival stabilized the Chiefs’ offense. His influence extended beyond stats—he and Brown mentored rookie Xavier Worthy, whose performance surged post-trade.

Over his first nine games, Worthy logged 20 catches for 246 yards. In the next seven, he nearly doubled that output (39 receptions, 392 yards), crediting Hopkins and Brown for sharing route-running secrets. “They taught me techniques I can’t reveal,” Worthy joked.
