The Ark of the Covenant, a biblical chest said to hold the Ten Commandments, has eluded discovery for millennia. But declassified CIA files from the 1980s reveal a bizarre chapter in its search: psychic spies claimed to pinpoint its location.

Biblical Origins and Disappearance
According to scripture, the Ark was built by Israelites fleeing Egypt around 1445 BC. Moses placed stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments inside this gold-covered wooden chest. For centuries, it reportedly resided in Jerusalem’s Holy of Holies—a sacred temple chamber—before vanishing during Babylon’s sack of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

The CIA’s Psychic Experiment
In the 1980s, the CIA conducted “remote viewing” tests under Project Sun Streak, using individuals claiming psychic abilities to gather intel. One 1988 session tasked “Remote Viewer No. 032” with locating a target using coordinates. Unaware of the goal, the viewer described a coffin-shaped object made of wood, gold, and silver, adorned with a six-winged angel. They noted it was hidden underground in the Middle East, guarded by entities, and surrounded by Arabic speakers.

The psychic warned the Ark could only be opened by “authorized” individuals, adding that intruders would face destruction by an “unknown power.” Sketches accompanying the report depicted domed mosques, mummy-like figures, and a winged “seraphim” creature.

Ethiopia’s Competing Legend
While the CIA file points to the Middle East, Ethiopia has long claimed the Ark rests in Aksum’s Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion. Legends say Menelik I, son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, stole the Ark from Jerusalem. Though British scholar Edward Ullendorff claimed to see it during WWII, colleagues dismissed it as a replica.

Skepticism and Ongoing Mystery
Despite the CIA’s eerie report, historians remain doubtful. Remote viewing, though studied during the Cold War, lacks scientific credibility. The document resurfaced in 2023 on the Ninjas are Butterflies podcast, reigniting debates. Host Josh Hooper called the findings “bone-chilling” but acknowledged the unverified nature of psychic espionage.

The Ark’s fate endures as one of history’s great enigmas. Whether hidden in a Middle Eastern tomb, guarded by otherworldly forces, or enshrined in Ethiopia, its discovery—if ever confirmed—would rewrite history. For now, the search continues, blending ancient faith with modern intrigue.
