Major U.S. airports along the East Coast, including Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Washington Dulles, Reagan National, and Baltimore/Washington International, issued ground stops on Tuesday as severe thunderstorms threatened the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of 60 mph winds, quarter-sized hail, and up to four inches of rain, prompting concerns over flooding, power outages, and travel disruptions.
Airports Affected and Delays
- Newark Liberty (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA): Ground stops until 6 PM ET.
- Philadelphia (PHL) and Washington Dulles (IAD): Halts until 5 PM ET.
- Reagan National (DCA): Paused until 4:30 PM ET.
- Baltimore/Washington (BWI): Stops until 5:45 PM ET.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned of a 60% chance these stoppages could extend, with Newark passengers already facing 3+ hour delays. Over 1,300 flights were canceled the previous day due to similar weather, compounding this week’s travel chaos.

Weather Threats and Traveler Advice
The NWS emphasized risks of downed trees, damaged power lines, and flash floods. Travel expert Jesse Neugarten of Dollar Flight Club urged passengers to:
- Monitor delays proactively using airline apps.
- Rebook swiftly via app/website before gate lines form.
- Call international helplines (e.g., Canada/UK) for shorter wait times.
“If your inbound flight is delayed elsewhere, assume yours will be too. Act fast to secure alternatives,” Neugarten advised.
Broader Impacts
General aviation pauses also hit Boston Logan and Las Vegas Airport, affecting private and non-scheduled flights. With storms expected to linger into Wednesday from New Hampshire to the Carolinas, travelers are urged to pack patience and stay alert for updates.
