Liverpool and Wrexham icon Joey Jones, revered for his tenacity and loyalty across a storied career, has passed away at age 70. The former defender, a two-time European Cup winner with Liverpool and a Welsh international, was dubbed "Mr Wrexham" for his lifelong connection to his boyhood club.

A Career of Passion and Triumph
Jones began at Wrexham in 1971, helping them lift the Welsh Cup in 1975 before joining Liverpool later that year. At Anfield, he became a cult hero, winning the 1976–77 First Division, two European Cups (1977, 1978), the UEFA Cup, and the European Super Cup. His legacy was immortalized during the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Mönchengladbach when fans unveiled the iconic banner: “Joey Ate The Frogs Legs, Made The Swiss Roll, Now He’s Munching Gladbach.”

After leaving Liverpool in 1978, Jones returned to Wrexham as their record £200,000 signing. Though he later played for Chelsea (aiding their promotion to the First Division in 1984) and Huddersfield (earning Player of the Season in 1985), his heart remained in Wrexham. He totaled 479 appearances across three spells there, cementing his status as a club legend.

Jones’ passing marks the loss of a footballing warrior whose passion transcended eras. As tributes flood in, his words during Liverpool’s 1977 victory parade resonate: “I’m just a normal lad from Wales who got lucky.” To fans worldwide, he was anything but ordinary.

Rest in peace, Joey. YNWA.
