Manchester United famously passed up the chance to sign Harry Kane in 2023, opting instead for Rasmus Hojlund in a £72 million deal. Former Red Devils coach Benni McCarthy has now shed light on the club’s decision-making process—and the stark contrast in the two strikers’ fortunes since.

The Kane Pursuit That Never Was
In 2023, United were heavily linked with Tottenham’s talisman Kane, who had established himself as one of Europe’s elite forwards. However, a formal bid never materialized. Instead, United pivoted to Atalanta’s Hojlund, a young Dane seen as a long-term investment. Kane later joined Bayern Munich for £100 million, where he has since scored 73 goals in 75 games, including 21 Bundesliga strikes this season.

Hojlund, meanwhile, has struggled to replicate that form, netting 23 goals in 75 appearances for United. His recent drought—no goals in nine matches—has highlighted the club’s attacking woes amid an injury crisis.

Why United Chose Hojlund
McCarthy, who worked at United under Erik ten Hag, explained the rationale behind the decision: “Harry Kane was the complete package, but the club believed Højlund would be a more prized asset for the future. We stopped pursuing Kane and focused solely on Rasmus.”

Benni McCarthy
Benni McCarthy revealed United prioritized long-term potential over Kane’s immediate impact.

The gamble on Hojlund’s potential was clear. Despite flashes of promise—such as his late winner against Brentford in October—consistency has eluded him. Kane, by contrast, has thrived in Munich, aiding Bayern’s bid to reclaim the Bundesliga title.

Kane’s Trophy Quest vs. Hojlund’s Struggles
While Kane edges closer to his first career trophy, Hojlund faces mounting pressure. The 21-year-old’s recent performances have drawn criticism, with United’s attack looking toothless in key matches.

Kane’s Bayern Form
Kane has been pivotal for Bayern, scoring 29 goals in 30 games this season.

What’s Next?
Kane’s near-misses with silverware at Spurs and England made his Bayern move pivotal. The Bavarians currently lead the Bundesliga and remain in Champions League contention.

For United, Hojlund’s development is critical. McCarthy acknowledged the striker’s potential but conceded: “The Premier League is unforgiving. Rasmus needs time, but patience is wearing thin among fans.”

While Kane’s absence is felt at Old Trafford, the financial commitment to a younger prospect reflects United’s strategy under Ruben Amorim. Only time will tell if Hojlund can justify the faith—and whether passing on Kane becomes a lasting regret.
