Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a sharp response to a Spanish journalist questioning a contentious refereeing decision during the Red Devils’ 3-0 Europa League semifinal first-leg victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Controversial Penalty and Red Card
The match turned in the 37th minute when Bilbao defender Dani Vivian was penalized for impeding Rasmus Hojlund in the box. After a lengthy VAR review, referee Espen Eskas awarded a penalty and sent off Vivian for not attempting to play the ball. Fernandes converted the spot-kick, adding a second goal eight minutes later, while Casemiro headed in the opener.

Bilbao’s players and staff were furious, arguing that Alejandro Garnacho had handled the ball in the build-up to the penalty. Manager Ernesto Valverde said, “We protested a handball by Garnacho… but the referee decided it was a penalty and a red card.” Striker Inaki Williams echoed: “The play before the penalty comes from a handball the referee didn’t see.”

Fernandes’ Fiery Response
When pressed about the red card, Fernandes schooled the reporter in Spanish:
“Why wasn’t it a red? Do you know the rules? If he tackles with his feet, it’s a yellow. If he pushes with his hands, it’s a red.”

Vivian’s challenge on Hojlund led to the decisive penalty and dismissal.

The Portuguese midfielder dismissed Bilbao’s handball claims, stating he hadn’t seen the incident but pointed out a potential foul on Garnacho earlier. He added: “Referees make mistakes, but I don’t think he did today. Talking about refs is a custom in Spain and Portugal, but I’m in England now—my mindset has changed.”

Commanding Lead for United
United’s dominant first-half performance, fueled by Casemiro’s header and Fernandes’ brace, silenced the hostile San Mames crowd. The Red Devils now carry a hefty advantage into next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

Despite the scoreline, Fernandes warned against complacency: “Nobody expected this result, but it’s not done. The same could happen at Old Trafford.” Manager Erik ten Hag praised his team’s focus but emphasized the tie remains open.

Bilbao’s Uphill Battle
The Basque side must overturn a three-goal deficit without key defender Vivian. Valverde admitted the red card “changed everything,” while Williams vowed to fight until the end. However, United’s ruthless display makes them heavy favorites to reach the final—set to be held at San Mames on May 22.
