Instagram Discontinues Fan-Favorite Feature Today Amid Widespread User Disappointment

Instagram to Shut Down Beloved "Content Notes" Feature

Instagram is discontinuing its "Content Notes" tool, sparking mixed reactions from users. The feature, which allowed people to add short, follower-only comments to posts, will be phased out in the coming weeks.

Instagram Notes Feature
Instagram Content Notes let users attach brief messages visible only to their followers.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, announced the decision in a March 26 video, explaining the feature had low adoption rates. "We launched Notes to make Instagram more social, but it wasn’t widely used," he said, adding that the platform is simplifying by removing underused tools.

The move has disappointed some creators and users. "I’m inconsolable," tweeted one content creator, who relied on Notes to boost engagement. Followers received notifications when Notes were added, helping posts gain visibility—a key tactic for attracting brand partnerships. Others called Notes a "middle ground" between stories and comments, allowing casual sharing without cluttering feeds.

User Reactions
While some users mourn Notes, Instagram says few people actively used the feature.

However, many users welcomed the change. Critics previously called Notes intrusive, complaining they crowded feeds with unwanted content. "It’s annoying. I don’t want more posts from accounts I don’t follow," wrote a Reddit user. Others noted the lack of an "off" button for the feature.

Instagram confirmed it will continue testing new tools to enhance user experience. Though controversial, the decision reflects the platform’s focus on streamlining features. As Notes vanish, loyal users must adapt—whether by sharing more stories or finding creative workarounds.
