Country star Jelly Roll (born Jason DeFord) could soon have his criminal record cleared after the Tennessee Board of Parole unanimously recommended a pardon for his past convictions. The 40-year-old, who racked up nearly 40 arrests in his youth—including armed robbery and drug charges—has transformed into a chart-topping artist and philanthropist.

DeFord’s troubled past began at age 14 with juvenile detention. By 15, he participated in an armed robbery, later facing drug possession and distribution charges. His turning point came in 2008 when his daughter Bailee was born while he was incarcerated. “I had to figure this out right now,” he told Billboard, vowing to change his life.

Since his rise to fame in 2022, DeFord has dedicated himself to community service, funding meals for the homeless, donating concert proceeds to at-risk youth programs, and performing in prisons. His efforts caught the attention of the Tennessee parole board, which praised his rehabilitation during a recent hearing. Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall and Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino testified in support, citing his philanthropy and growth.

Despite the board’s recommendation, the final decision rests with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. If pardoned, DeFord hopes to expand his advocacy globally. His criminal record currently bars him from easy international travel, including Canadian tours, and complicates securing insurance or housing. He recounted being denied a home in a gated community due to his felony history.

DeFord, now a father of two and married to wife Bunnie XO since 2016, emphasizes his mission to inspire others. “I want people to know change is possible,” he said, expressing plans for future missionary work. An immigration attorney noted a pardon would streamline travel permits, allowing him to share his story worldwide.

Governor Lee has yet to rule but called the board’s endorsement “encouraging.” For DeFord, the hearing itself marked a milestone: “This was special for me, regardless.” With a clean slate, he aims to turn his hard-earned redemption into a beacon of hope.
