RB Leipzig have initiated talks with Liverpool over a potential move for midfielder Harvey Elliott, according to reports. The Bundesliga club views the 22-year-old as a replacement for Xavi Simons, who is reportedly nearing a switch to Chelsea.
Simons was omitted from Leipzig’s pre-season friendly squad amid growing speculation about his exit. Elliott, meanwhile, featured for Liverpool in their 4-1 friendly win over Athletic Club on Monday, scoring in the match. Despite his contributions, the midfielder has hinted at a possible departure to secure regular first-team football.

Elliott’s Frustrations and Leipzig’s Interest
Elliott started just two Premier League games last season, both after Liverpool had already secured the title. The arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen has further crowded the midfield, prompting Elliott to admit he cannot afford to “waste years” of his career.
“I need to be the best version of myself,” Elliott said earlier this summer. “If that means leaving, it’s a decision I’ll have to make.”
Leipzig’s interest comes at a pivotal moment. The German side, known for developing young talent, could offer Elliott the starting role he craves. Reports suggest Liverpool may demand £40–50 million, potentially including a buy-back clause.

Elliott’s Rise and International Pedigree
A fan favorite at Anfield, Elliott has made 147 appearances for Liverpool since joining in 2019. His stock rose further this summer as he starred in England’s U21 European Championship triumph, netting five goals and earning Player of the Tournament honors.

What’s Next?
While Liverpool value Elliott’s potential, his desire for minutes may force a tough decision. Leipzig’s track record with talents like Timo Werner and Josko Gvardiol could make the move appealing. For now, the ball remains in Liverpool’s court as negotiations develop.
