Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has issued an urgent recall for 20,999 Range Rover Evoque SUVs in the U.S. due to a dangerous defect in the front passenger airbag. The issue, which could cause the airbag to tear during deployment, poses a serious risk of injury or even burns from leaking hot gas in a collision.

Key Risks and Manufacturer Response

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that improperly folded airbags might fail to protect occupants in crashes. While no injuries have been reported, JLR urges owners to visit dealerships for free repairs starting August 29.

What Caused the Defect?
The problem first emerged during May 2023 tests showing abnormal airbag deployments. Investigations traced it to inconsistent folding during assembly at supplier Joyson Safety Systems Hungary, leading to tears upon inflation. JLR confirmed the defect on June 30 and alerted NHTSA promptly.

Steps for Owners

  • Check if affected: Use the NHTSA recall website or JLR’s portal with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Free repairs: Dealers will replace airbag modules starting late August.
  • Reimbursements: Customers who paid for prior repairs may qualify.

This marks JLR’s second U.S. safety concern in weeks. In June, NHTSA opened a probe into 90,000+ vehicles for steering knuckle defects linked to wheel separation risks.

Broader Context

This recall follows Ford’s recent warning over engine stalling in 1.3 million vehicles. JLR’s swift action reflects growing scrutiny on automotive safety standards. Owners are advised to act quickly to mitigate risks.
