California Hit by 3.3 Magnitude Earthquake Amid Warnings of "The Big One"

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck California’s San Jacinto Fault Zone near Borrego Springs, 85 miles north of San Diego, on Wednesday. While minor, the tremor added urgency to warnings of a looming major earthquake along the San Andreas Fault, which scientists say has a 72% chance of a magnitude 7.8+ quake by 2055.

Fault Lines Under Pressure
The San Jacinto Fault Zone, a critical part of the San Andreas system, has produced 10 quakes of magnitude 6.0+ in the past century. Though Wednesday’s quake caused no damage, it underscores California’s seismic risks. The state experiences 20–30 daily quakes, but most are too small to feel.

The "Big One" Threat
The San Andreas Fault, stretching 800 miles, is overdue for a catastrophic rupture. A 7.8+ quake could devastate the Bay Area, causing 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries, and $200 billion in damage, according to the Great California Shakeout. Sarah Minson of the USGS warns that smaller, frequent quakes also pose significant cumulative risks.
