Manchester United’s deadline day ended with mixed results as they missed out on a midfield target but secured a new goalkeeper. The club reportedly made a late attempt to sign Stuttgart and Germany midfielder Angelo Stiller, but the Bundesliga side rebuffed the approach.

Failed Move for Stiller
The Red Devils had prioritized bolstering their midfield after failing to land Brighton’s Carlos Baleba earlier in the summer. According to BILD, they turned their attention to Stiller, a 24-year-old former Bayern Munich academy product. However, Stuttgart held firm, and Stiller reportedly prioritized regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Stiller started 31 Bundesliga matches last season and featured in eight Champions League games, though Stuttgart finished ninth in 2024–25, missing European qualification. The four-cap German international has drawn praise for his composure and versatility, making him a long-term target for United, who may revisit negotiations next summer.

Lammens Joins to Solve Goalkeeping Woes
While their midfield search stalled, United finalized a £21.7m deal for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The 23-year-old Belgian, who won the 2023 Belgian Super Cup and earned a national team call-up in March, signed a five-year contract.

Lammens expressed his excitement, calling the move a “dream come true” and praising the club’s “positive atmosphere.” He added, “I know I can make a real impact here and grow with this exciting team.”

United’s statement highlighted Lammens’ 64 appearances for Antwerp and his potential to stabilize a position that has seen inconsistency since David de Gea’s departure. Manager Ruben Amorim now has a youthful option to compete with André Onana and Tom Heaton.

What’s Next for United?
With the transfer window closed, Amorim will focus on integrating Lammens and addressing midfield depth internally. Fans may have to wait until 2026 for another Stiller pursuit, but the arrival of Lammens offers hope for defensive solidity.
