Mitchell Marsh might be out of favor with Australia’s Test selectors, but the all-rounder’s wit remains sharp. During a visit to North Melbourne’s AFL team this week, Marsh took a savage swipe at England’s retired bowling great Jimmy Anderson.
When asked by a player, “Who was one bowler you found easy to get away?” Marsh deadpanned: “James Anderson… when he played in Australia, he was pedestrian.”
Realizing he was on camera, the 33-year-old quickly softened his jab: “Sorry, I didn’t mean that… he’s got 600 wickets!” Older brother Shaun then piled on, nominating Ashes villain Stuart Broad as another “easy” target—despite Broad’s 604 Test wickets.
Marsh’s lighthearted dig at Anderson went viral ahead of the Kangaroos’ AFL clash vs. Fremantle.
The brothers’ banter highlights their long-standing rivalry with England’s pace icons. Anderson, 42, retired in 2024 with 704 Test wickets, while Broad, 38, hung up his boots in 2023 after tormenting Australia for years.
Broad’s Revenge?
Broad hasn’t lost his edge in retirement, recently serving as a consultant for South Africa’s pace attack ahead of their World Test Championship final against Australia. At Lord’s, he shared tactical tips about exploiting the pitch’s famous slope.
“It’s about the nuances of the ground—overseas bowlers often struggle here,” Broad said. His advice paid off: South Africa needs just 69 runs on Day 2 (with 8 wickets left) to claim their first ICC trophy since 1998.
Anderson took 704 Test wickets but faced criticism for his performances in Australia.
Ashes Tensions Live On
The Marshes’ jokes tap into Australia’s lingering cheekiness toward England’s stars. Broad, infamous for refusing to walk during the 2013 Ashes, once declared he “woke up angry” when facing Aussies. Mitchell, meanwhile, has battled inconsistency in Tests but thrives in white-ball cricket, including a standout 2023 ODI World Cup.
Broad’s 604 Test wickets included 140 against Australia—many in Ashes drama.
Final Showdown Ahead
With South Africa closing in on victory at Lord’s, Australia’s Test squad faces a nervy Saturday. Meanwhile, Marsh’s future in the Baggy Green remains uncertain, but his humor ensures he’ll stay in headlines.
Play resumes at 7:30pm AEST. Can the Proteas end their ICC drought?
