Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is managing an aggravated disc in his back, casting uncertainty over his availability for the start of the NFL season. The 37-year-old star received an epidural to address the recurring issue and will be monitored on a week-to-week basis, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Stafford, a Super Bowl LVI champion and two-time Pro Bowler, has yet to participate in team practices during training camp. Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Stafford is limited to light activity, including stationary throwing and cardio workouts. “We’re taking it a week at a time,” McVay said, emphasizing caution to ensure Stafford is ready for the season opener on September 7.

The injury follows a standout 2024 season where Stafford led the Rams to the NFC Divisional Round, falling to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles. His absence has thrust backup Jimmy Garoppolo into the spotlight during preseason drills. The Rams also signed undrafted rookie Dresser Winn for depth.
Stafford’s health is critical for a team relying on his $44 million contract extension, finalized after a brief offseason contract dispute. The deal underscores his value, particularly after he revitalized the Rams’ offense last year, throwing for 4,300 yards and 28 touchdowns.
McVay and Stafford remain focused on Week 1 preparations.
Despite concerns, McVay expressed confidence in Stafford’s recovery: “We don’t have reason for concern, but we’re being smart. The main goal is September 7.” Stafford’s offseason included building chemistry with new receiver Davante Adams, a partnership pivotal for the Rams’ playoff ambitions.
With preseason games approaching, all eyes remain on Stafford’s rehab progress. For now, the Rams are prioritizing caution over urgency, hoping their veteran QB returns strong for another postseason push.
