A major AT&T outage disrupted mobile phone and internet services across the U.S. on Thursday afternoon, leaving thousands of customers stranded without connectivity. The outage began around 1:30 p.m. ET, affecting both cellular and landline internet users, and spanned major cities including New York, Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Atlanta.

Downdetector, a real-time outage monitoring platform, reported a surge in user complaints, with service disruptions concentrated in densely populated urban areas. The map showed glowing red clusters along the East and West Coasts, as well as parts of the South. AT&T, which serves approximately 118 million customers, has yet to confirm the cause or estimated resolution time.

Users took to social media to express frustration, citing an inability to make calls, send texts, or access emergency services. Businesses relying on AT&T’s network reported transactional delays, while some hospitals switched to backup systems to maintain operations.
Authorities urged affected customers to use Wi-Fi for emergency communications. The outage’s scale and timing—coinciding with peak business hours—raised concerns about infrastructure vulnerabilities.
This is a developing story. Updates to follow.
