Liverpool band Cast opened Oasis’ highly anticipated reunion tour in Cardiff on Friday with a heartfelt tribute to footballer Diogo Jota, who died tragically in a car crash just days earlier. Frontman John Power dedicated their song Walkaway to the 28-year-old Liverpool striker, telling the crowd, “This one is for Diogo Jota. Take it easy, brother.”

Jota and his brother André, 26, a player for Portuguese club Penafiel, were killed when their £180,000 Lamborghini Huracán suffered a tire blowout while overtaking on Spain’s A-52 highway. The car veered into barriers, rolled, and burst into flames. The brothers were reportedly traveling to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK after Jota was advised against flying post-surgery.

Football World Mourns

The news sent shockwaves through football. Fans flooded Anfield with tributes, singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson tearfully left a scarf and flowers, while teammates and rivals united in grief. Jota, who scored six goals in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League-winning season, had recently married wife Rute Cardoso on June 22. The couple, childhood sweethearts from Gondomar, Portugal, had three young children.

Funeral Draws Thousands

On Friday, hundreds queued in Gondomar to pay respects at Jota’s wake, where Portugal’s Prime Minister and football agent Jorge Mendes attended. His funeral, held Saturday, drew emotional scenes as fans carried roses and national team scarves. Aerial footage showed crowds stretching from the chapel to a nearby church.

Jota’s career included 182 appearances for Liverpool and a UEFA Nations League title with Portugal in June 2024. Teammates remembered his relentless spirit, with manager Arne Slot calling him “irreplaceable.” André, his younger brother, was rising through Portugal’s second division.

The Oasis tour continued with Richard Ashcroft performing Verve classics, but the night belonged to Jota—a talent gone too soon.
