Arsenal legend Paul Merson has launched a scathing critique of the club’s £52million move for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, calling him the “last” player they should target from their London rivals. The former forward also raised concerns that the transfer might hint at Bukayo Saka’s potential departure.

Madueke, 23, became Arsenal’s fourth summer signing and the seventh Chelsea player to join under Mikel Arteta. He will wear the No. 20 shirt and link up with the squad in August after participating in Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign. Arteta praised Madueke as “one of the most talented wide forwards in the Premier League,” but skepticism has brewed among fans. Over 5,200 supporters signed a petition (#NoToMadueke) opposing the deal, citing doubts over his consistency and fit.

Merson, a Chelsea supporter and Arsenal icon, didn’t hold back in his Sky Sports column: “Chelsea won’t believe their luck. If Arsenal bought any player from them, Madueke would’ve been the last one I’d pick.” He even claimed he’d prefer out-of-favor Manchester United star Jadon Sancho over the England international.

The pundit questioned the logic behind the signing, asking whether it signals plans to sell Saka: “If fit, Saka plays. So why spend £52m on a backup? Are they preparing for his exit?” Saka, whose contract runs until 2027, has shown no signs of leaving, but Merson fears the move creates unnecessary speculation.

Madueke addressed criticism in an emotional farewell to Chelsea, thanking fans for “praise and criticism” and calling his three-year stint a “privilege.” Rio Ferdinand also defended him, slamming Arsenal fans’ petition as “utterly disgraceful” and urging empathy: “Put yourself in his shoes—how must that feel?”

Since joining Chelsea from PSV in 2023, Madueke scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 92 appearances, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup. While Arteta sees potential, Merson remains unconvinced, calling the transfer a “panic buy” and questioning its long-term value.

As pre-season begins, all eyes will be on how Madueke adapts—and whether Saka’s future stays rock-solid.
