An 18-year-old New Zealand jockey, Ngakau Hailey, tragically died on July 10, 2025, following a motorbike collision in Hamilton. The incident occurred at 3:25 PM at the intersection of Willoughby and Mill Streets, leaving two others hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Hailey, a promising talent in horse racing, was critically injured in the crash and later succumbed to his wounds. Tributes poured in from the racing community, with mentor Debbie Sweeney calling him a “lovable kid” and trainer David Ellis stating, “The sky was ahead of him.” His first career win in 2023 aboard Chattahoochee and his final race on July 5 highlighted his burgeoning potential.

A Givealittle fundraiser has garnered over NZ$21,000 to support his family, described as a “bright future taken too soon.”

The Waikato Junior Rugby League also honored Hailey, noting his athleticism and spirit. A minute’s silence was held at Cambridge Racecourse, underscoring the profound loss felt nationwide.
