Report Claims Apple May Abandon USB-C for Portless iPhone Design
Apple Considers Portless iPhone, Potentially Bypassing USB-C Mandate
By Jonathan Chadwick
Apple may soon release an iPhone without any charging port, relying entirely on wireless charging and circumventing EU regulations requiring USB-C, reports suggest.
The Portless Revolution
Currently, iPhones use USB-C ports for charging and data transfer, but Apple reportedly explored a portless design for the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. Instead of a charging port, the device would feature a seamless metal bottom edge, requiring users to charge wirelessly via MagSafe or Qi pads.
Current iPhones (pictured) include USB-C ports, but Apple may remove them entirely.
EU Regulation Loophole
In 2022, the EU mandated USB-C ports for major devices to reduce e-waste. While Apple complied in 2023 by replacing its proprietary Lightning port with USB-C, a portless iPhone would technically comply with the law. EU press officer Federica Miccoli confirmed that wireless-only devices are exempt from the USB-C requirement.
Why Go Portless?
Removing ports simplifies design, improves waterproofing, and aligns with Apple’s trend toward wireless ecosystems. Analyst Mark Gurman notes the “world is probably ready” for this shift, citing widespread wireless charging adoption. However, critics argue it limits wired data transfer and accessories.
Wireless charging pads use electromagnetic induction to power devices.
iPhone 17 Lineup Details
The iPhone 17 Air (“Slim”) is expected to debut in September 2025 as a lightweight, premium model. Leaked dummies suggest four variants: Pro Max, Pro, Standard, and Air. Gurman claims Apple hesitated to make the Air portless this year but may revisit the idea for future models.
From Lightning to USB-C to… Nothing
Apple initially resisted USB-C, using Lightning ports until EU regulations forced a change. A portless iPhone would mark another pivot, echoing the removal of headphone jacks in 2016.
Challenges Ahead
Wireless charging is slower than wired options, and portless designs complicate tasks like data transfers. Apple may promote cloud services or enhanced MagSafe features to offset these limitations.
User Reactions
While some welcome fewer cables, others criticize the potential inconvenience. “I still use wired charging in my car and for quick top-ups,” said Reddit user @TechLover22. “This feels like a step backward.”
Apple has not commented, but industry watchers predict a portless iPhone could launch as early as 2026.
What’s Next?
If successful, Apple’s move could push Android manufacturers to follow suit, accelerating the shift to a wireless future. For now, the iPhone 17 lineup retains USB-C, but the days of charging ports seem numbered.
