Robin Wright Hails ‘Liberating’ Move from U.S. with ‘Sweet’ Architect Boyfriend
*Robin Wright Finds Liberation in UK Move, Calls America a ‘Sht Show’**
Robin Wright, 59, has dubbed her relocation from the U.S. to the U.K. “liberating,” candidly describing her former home as a “sht show.” The House of Cards* star is among a wave of Hollywood celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Ryan Gosling, and Eva Mendes, who have left the U.S. in recent years.
Wright, who moved to England several years ago, met her British-Australian boyfriend, architect Henry Smith, 52, in a Chilterns pub. “America is a s** show,” she told The Sunday Times*. “I love being in this country. There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind. They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition, and speed.”

A Fresh Start Across the Pond
Wright’s breaking point came amid relentless construction noise from neighbors in Los Angeles. “Everyone’s building a huge house, and I’m done with all that. I love the quiet,” she said. Her romance with Smith blossomed during the pandemic after a bold first encounter: “He put his pint down, came over, and grabbed my shoulders. He asked, ‘Who the f are you?’ I said, ‘Who the f are you?’ And that was it.” The couple now plans to settle in a seaside rental with their Labradors, Rusty and Rocky.
Hollywood’s UK Exodus
Wright isn’t alone in her transatlantic shift. Stars like Tom Ford, DeGeneres, and Portia de Rossi have also sought refuge in the U.K., with many citing political or lifestyle reasons. DeGeneres and de Rossi relocated to the Cotswolds, while O’Donnell moved to Ireland. Gosling and Mendes quietly settled in London, embracing a slower pace.

Love and Letting Go
Wright, who has been married three times, ruled out a fourth wedding: “No. God, no. Why? That’s unnecessary.” She split from third husband Clément Giraudet in 2022 and shares two adult children with ex Sean Penn. Reflecting on her new chapter, she said, “I want to grow old with somebody, travel, and see the world. Henry is a sweetheart—a good, decent adult. He’s a man.”
Navigating British Quirks
While embracing her life in England, Wright remains puzzled by its class system: “Why are you guys so obsessed with who went to this boarding school or university? Who gives a s***?”

Career Moves
Wright stars in Amazon’s upcoming thriller The Girlfriend (premiering September 10), playing an overprotective mother in a twisted love triangle. “It’s about two women fighting over the same love—a tug-of-war,” she said, drawing parallels to her own “mummy radar” with her son’s past relationships.
For Wright, the UK offers peace and authenticity: “It’s liberating to be done searching. I’m seen and loved for who I am here.”
