Humanoid robots capable of washing dishes, vacuuming, cooking, and tidying up laundry could become household staples within 5–10 years—and cost as much as a family car (£16,000–£40,000), experts predict. These AI-driven machines, equipped with adaptable arms, legs, and hands, are already in development globally.

MIT associate professor Pulkit Agrawal explains: “Silicon Valley companies may promise robots within a year, but realistically, deployment will take time. The technology is progressing, but practical applications require refinement.”

AI Adaptability Is Key
Current research focuses on AI systems that allow robots to navigate diverse home layouts and learn new tasks. Early models will perform limited chores but could later download upgrades via an “App Store” for expanded capabilities.

Agrawal envisions a future where “a single robot locks doors, fetches newspapers, does laundry, and loads dishwashers.” However, challenges remain in balancing strength and gentleness: robots must grasp objects without damaging them.

MIT’s Breakthrough in Robotics
MIT scientists recently trained a robotic hand using advanced AI to handle objects with near-human precision. The next step? Teaching it to pick up delicate items like a dollar bill.

Cost vs. Convenience
While the price tag aligns with mid-range cars, affordability for average households remains a hurdle. Still, proponents argue the long-term benefits—time savings and enhanced quality of life—could justify the investment.

Though sci-fi-inspired “dream robots” won’t arrive overnight, rapid advancements in AI and engineering suggest a future where robotic helpers are as common as smartphones. For now, the race is on to perfect machines that blend brains, brawn, and subtlety.
