Ryan Gravenberch Embraces Virgil van Dijk’s Mentorship to Anchor Arne Slot’s Liverpool Vision
Ryan Gravenberch’s Breakthrough Season: Mentorship, Growth, and Fatherhood
Few players have shone brighter for Liverpool this season than Ryan Gravenberch, whose rise has been fueled by the guidance of captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch midfielder, dubbed Van Dijk’s “little brother,” credits his compatriot for mentoring him through a campaign that has made him a frontrunner for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Year.
Van Dijk’s influence stretches beyond the pitch. From rigorous recovery advice to tactical tutorials on mastering the No. 6 role, the Liverpool skipper has been a constant presence. Gravenberch recalls watching clips of the club’s 2019 Champions League parade with Van Dijk, sparking excitement for their own title celebrations. “Seeing those scenes made me dream,” he says. “Now it’s reality.”

After a quiet debut season, Gravenberch has become the heartbeat of Liverpool’s midfield under manager Arne Slot. The 23-year-old started all but one league game this term, excelling in a deeper role after a transformative summer call from Slot. “He told me he saw me as a defensive midfielder. I had to adapt, but it’s made me who I am now,” Gravenberch explains.
The transition wasn’t seamless. “Defensive positioning and duels were new challenges,” he admits, crediting assistant coach John Heitinga and Van Dijk for their support. Video sessions and relentless drills honed his playmaking and discipline. “Virgil pushed me to focus on recovery—ice baths, saunas—and it’s paid off,” he adds.

Though naturally inclined to drive forward, Gravenberch has embraced his role’s demands. “I’m more vocal now, demanding the ball to control games,” he says. Teams increasingly targeted him as the season progressed, prompting tactical tweaks with Alexis Mac Allister. “Switching roles mid-game keeps opponents guessing,” he notes.
Off the pitch, joy awaits: Gravenberch and his partner are expecting their first child. “It’s a special year—I’m nervous but excited,” he shares.

Reflecting on Liverpool’s title triumph, Gravenberch remains humble. “If you’d told me we’d win the league back in August, I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are.”
As the Reds prepare for their victory parade, Gravenberch’s journey—from squad player to key figure—highlights resilience and the power of mentorship. With a Premier League medal and fatherhood on the horizon, his story is only beginning.
