For millions in the UK, football matches are more than just games—they’re a shared passion that unites communities. Fans brave weather, travel hassles, and emotional rollercoasters to support their teams. But for David Norman, 66, a routine drive home from a match in November 2022 turned into a life-or-death moment—and an extraordinary act of kindness from a rival supporter.
A Collapse, a Rescue, and a Second Chance
David, a Northampton Town fan, suffered a cardiac arrest while driving near Luton’s Kenilworth Road stadium after a game. His car veered into another vehicle, leaving him unconscious. Reading supporter Pippa, attending her team’s away match, sprang into action. “I undid his seatbelt, pulled him from the car, and started CPR with another bystander,” she recalled. Emergency services arrived swiftly, using a defibrillator to restart his heart.

Pippa left unsure if David survived until a paramedic later messaged her: “He’s alive.” Overcome with relief, she said, “I just cried.” David, who has no memory of the incident, calls Pippa his “best friend”: “She saved my life—it’s as simple as that.”
Reunited Through Football
Months later, the pair met when their teams faced off. David expressed awe at Pippa’s selflessness: “An opposition fan saved me. It’s numbing and stunning to meet her.” Their story highlights football’s power to bridge divides, even in crises.

The Lifesaving Power of CPR
David credits CPR for his survival and urges others to learn the skill. He and Pippa now champion the Sky Bet EFL Every Minute Matters Relay, a British Heart Foundation (BHF) campaign aiming to teach 360,000 fans CPR via the free RevivR app.
How to Perform CPR
- Call 999 if someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
- Start compressions: Push hard and fast on the chest center (100–120 beats per minute). The Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive provides the right rhythm.
- Use a defibrillator if available—it guides you through each step.

David’s close call reshaped his outlook: “Every minute is precious. I shouldn’t be here.” His story is a rallying cry for CPR education—a skill that turns bystanders into lifesavers.
