Surprisingly, its chemical makeup (sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide) closely mirrored the fictional kryptonite formula from Superman Returns.

Forming jadarite requires precise conditions reminiscent of baking: alkaline lakes, volcanic glass, and clay mineral transformation. “Ingredients must be exact—too acidic or cold, and it won’t form,” explains mineralogist Dr. Francesco Putzolu. This specificity explains its rarity; beyond Serbia, no other deposits exist.
