Selena Gomez Follows Taylor Swift’s Lead in Re-Recording Past Favorite Song

Selena Gomez Considers Re-Recording Emotional Teenage Anthem, Reflects on Taylor Swift Friendship

Selena Gomez, 33, recently revealed her desire to re-record her 2011 hit Who Says from her Selena Gomez & The Scene days, inspired by the emotional connection she still feels to the track. During an episode of the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, the singer-actress admitted she tearfully revisited the song while abroad, struck by its enduring message. “I was like, ‘Why the f*** am I tearing up to my own song?’” she shared. “It was little me saying powerful things I still need to hear.”

The track, a self-empowerment anthem from her band’s When the Sun Goes Down album, holds new meaning for Gomez. “Back then, it was about societal standards, but now it resonates deeper,” she explained. She joked about adjusting the key to match her matured voice: “I’d have to take it down an octave each year I’ve sung it!”

Gomez hasn’t toured since 2016 but hinted at a comeback solely to perform Who Says. “That’s the only reason I’d tour again,” she said, adding, “I should recut it.” When host Jake Shane encouraged the idea, she playfully replied, “We’ll see what happens.”

Friendship With Taylor Swift: Bonded Over Jonas Brothers Breakups
The podcast also delved into Gomez’s 16-year friendship with Taylor Swift. The duo bonded in 2008 after both dated Jonas Brothers (Selena with Nick, Taylor with Joe) and navigated heartbreak as teens. “Our friendship was the best thing to come from that time,” Gomez said. She recalled Swift privately sharing an unreleased track, calling it “incredible,” though she didn’t name the song.

Reflecting on their bond, Gomez praised Swift’s authenticity: “She’s remained the same person—driven, kind, and fiercely loyal.” The pair have supported each other through career highs and personal struggles, with Gomez even appearing in Swift’s Bad Blood music video.

From Teen Star to Timeless Artist
Gomez’s journey from Disney Channel star to Grammy-nominated artist has been marked by evolution. While she’s focused on acting lately (Only Murders in the Building), music remains close to her heart. Re-recording Who Says would follow Swift’s successful re-recording strategy, reclaiming control of her early work.

Whether she revives the track or not, Gomez’s vulnerability highlights her growth. “I appreciate the song differently now,” she said. “It’s a reminder of how far I’ve come.”
