Cuddly Toys Hold Twice the Germs of a Toilet Seat, Study Reveals

Children’s beloved stuffed animals may harbor dangerous germs, according to a new study by MattressNextDay. Researchers found that teddy bears and blankets carry twice as many bacteria as the average toilet seat, including harmful strains like Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.

Germ Hotspots Revealed
The team swabbed four items: a blanket, teddy bear, bin, and toilet seat. Using ATP bioluminescence tests (which detect living cells), they discovered 43% of blankets and 29% of teddies had contamination levels exceeding 1,000 units—far higher than toilet seats (864 units) or bins (294 units).

Hidden Health Risks
Dr. Snieguole Geige of the It’s Me & You Clinic warns that these items are breeding grounds for bacteria, fungi, and allergens. “Neglecting to wash them risks infections, respiratory issues, and skin conditions, especially in children with developing immune systems,” she says. Dust mites and mold on toys can also worsen allergies and asthma.

How to Clean Stuffed Toys Safely
Experts recommend:

  1. Protect the toy: Place it in a mesh laundry bag or tied pillowcase.
  2. Gentle wash: Use a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent.
  3. Air dry: Avoid dryers to prevent damage from heat.

Why It Matters
Regular cleaning isn’t just about dirt—it’s a health priority. Simple steps can protect children from avoidable illnesses while preserving their favorite cuddly companions.
