Renowned New Zealand jeweller and entrepreneur Sir Michael Hill has died at age 86 following a battle with cancer. The founder of Michael Hill Jewellers stepped down from his company’s board in April 2025 to focus on his health, with his passing confirmed by the brand on July 29.
In a heartfelt statement, the company honored Hill as a “celebrated jeweller, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and devoted family man.” Born in New Zealand, Hill and his wife, Christine, launched their first store in Whangārei in 1979. What began as a small business grew into a global empire with 287 stores across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, now headquartered in Brisbane.

Hill’s affordable luxury designs attracted A-list clients, including Kim Kardashian and Miranda Kerr. In 2010, he partnered with Kardashian for a “World’s Best Couple” contest, offering a 22-carat diamond engagement ring as a prize. His brand became synonymous with accessible elegance, blending craftsmanship with celebrity appeal.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised Hill’s legacy, stating, “Sir Michael’s grit and vision inspired generations of entrepreneurs. He built an iconic brand and gave back to his country.”
