Six-Legged Kitten Born After Absorbing Twin in Utero

Six-Legged Stray Cat Finds Second Chance After Life-Changing Surgery in Canada

Vets in Edmonton, Alberta, were stunned when a one-year-old stray cat named Bitsy arrived at their clinic with six legs. Rescued by Furget Me Not Animal Rescue in April 2025, Bitsy’s extra limbs—protruding from her back end—were deemed a rare case of a partially absorbed twin in utero.

Discovery and Diagnosis
Bitsy’s additional legs caused significant challenges. Three were non-functional, leading to mobility issues and discomfort. “She couldn’t position herself to eat properly,” explained Christine Koltun, the rescue’s founder. The cat also had sores on her legs, but her gentle demeanor suggested prior human care.

Surgery and Recovery
Vets at Windermere Veterinary Hospital performed a two-hour surgery to amputate the non-functioning limbs and part of her pelvis. Mackenzie Sawatzky, the clinic’s office manager, noted, “Removing the dead weight immediately improved her quality of life.” Post-surgery, Bitsy could finally rest comfortably. “She’d been splayed like a spider before,” Koltun recalled.

A Happy New Chapter
Sawatzky adopted Bitsy, who adapted remarkably. “She’s running, jumping, and thriving on three legs,” she shared. Bitsy’s resilience highlights the importance of rescue efforts. “She’s proof of second chances,” Koltun added.
