Son Heung-min has hinted at a possible departure from Tottenham after a decade at the club, following his long-awaited first trophy win in the Europa League last month. The 32-year-old captain, who has one year remaining on his contract, admitted his future is uncertain amid growing transfer speculation.
A Decade of Service, Finally Silverware
Son joined Spurs in 2015 and became a club icon, forming a historic attacking partnership with Harry Kane. The duo combined for more Premier League goals than any other pair, but trophies eluded them until this summer’s Europa League victory. Despite Spurs’ dismal 17th-place league finish, Son described the season as “really happy” due to finally lifting silverware.
Son became Tottenham’s first trophy-winning captain in 17 years.
Declining Output, Uncertain Future
Last season, Son scored just 11 goals—his lowest tally since his debut campaign—but provided 12 assists. With Kane now at Bayern Munich, Son’s influence has waned. Reports from The Sun suggest he’s considering a move to the Saudi Pro League or MLS to capitalize on his legacy.
When asked about his plans after South Korea’s 4-0 win over Kuwait, Son remained ambiguous:
“I still have one year left. Rather than saying anything now, we should wait and see. No matter where I end up, I’ll always do my best.”
Son’s future is in doubt as he enters the final year of his contract.
Spurs in Transition
Tottenham’s turbulent season saw manager Ange Postecoglou sacked despite the Europa League triumph, with Brentford’s Thomas Frank tipped to replace him. The club faces a major rebuild to compete in next season’s Champions League. Losing Son would compound their challenges, but the captain’s exit could free up funds for new signings.
Postecoglou was dismissed after Tottenham’s poor league campaign.
Leaving on a High
For Son, the Europa League win remains a career highlight:
“Football is about winning—only winners are remembered. Despite the difficult season, experiencing that trophy was priceless.”
At 32, this summer may be his last chance for a lucrative move. Whether he stays or goes, Son’s legacy as a Tottenham legend is secure—but the chance to depart as a champion could prove irresistible.
